National Intelligence Survey. British Borneo, Section 23, Weather and Climate

Abstract

The climate of British Borneo is typically equatorial, with most climatic elements exhibiting a monotonous uniformity throughout the year. Unknown in this NIS area are seasons as we know them in midlatitudes. Instead, the climate is dominated by a true monsoon circulation, with two great airstreams-the northeast and southwest monsoons. These airstreams are separated by the intertropical convergence zone, which migrates northward and southward with the changing seasons. Both airstreams undergo sufficiently long journeys over tropical waters to be warm and moist when they arrive over the Area. Consequently the climate is hot and humid throughout the year. Mountain locations are somewhat cooler than the lowlands but are equally humid. Although rainfall is plentiful everywhere, it varies considerably from place to place and from season to season, depending on local topography and the direction of the monsoonal flow.
