Square Deal Shipping Densities

Abstract

This report contains a description of the shipping surveillance conducted and of the shipping data gathered during the SQUARE DEAL Exercise, held in August and September 1972, under the sponsorship of LRAPP. A description is given of the aircraft operations and the areas covered, and of the basic data collected and the data reduction methods employed. Charts are presented of ship counts in 1 deg x 1 deg cells for each of the four days of shipping surveillance. Also included are tables of ship locations and of ship attributes such as speed, course, size, and type. The shipping densities found in SQUARE DEAL are compared with three other sources of shipping density. The variation of shipping density within SQUARE DEAL and possible causes thereof are discussed.
