MTU Optical System Analysis.

Abstract

In a study of the optical system of the MTU, the effects of mirror defects, mirror misalignments, thermal boundary layers, internal thermal blooming, and various laser beam energy phase distributions were determined. It was determined that, in the absence of external atmospheric effects, the MTU optical system is capable of better than the designed energy distributions over the designed target ranges. External atmospheric effects are the prime source of beam quality deterioration; the MTU system optical quality is sufficient to be well masked by the atmospheric effects. No further improvement in optical quality is warranted. (Author)
