Laser Diode Modulator Using Integrated Optics.

Abstract

The patent application comprises the use of a single semiconductor structure to provide a light emitting diode and a modulator for modulating the emission. The diode is separated from the modulator by an insulating channel that may be occupied by a 3 db coupler for coupling the diode output into one or more channels, and the diode output is amplitude modulated by a varying electric field in the junction region of the modulator(s).
