Irregular Optical Elements and Method of Fabrication.

Abstract

The patent application concerns spatial gradients in the index of refraction in a glass element of substantially uniform thickness which produce irregular optical elements having desired complex aspheric and/or asymmetric optical characteristics. The desired gradients in index of refraction for producing the irregular optical characteristics in the fabrication of the optical elements are caused by spatial control of an environment having a metal or other ion differential with respect to that of the glass optical element. Such spatial control may be given effect by localized maintenance of selected ambient conditions such as temperature, ion concentration, deposition rate, etc.
