Parallel Plate Transmission Line Avalanche Diode Test Circuit.

Abstract

The patent application relates to an improved parallel plate transmission line circuit for impedance tuning, particularly in TRAPATT and IMPATT diode oscillator and amplifier circuits. A three conductor transmission line is formed with two parallel ground planes enclosing a cylindrical center conductor. At one end connections are provided for coupling a diode to the transmission line, while at the other end a coaxial coupling is provided for attaching an RF load. A plurality of tuning elements are inserted into the open gap between the parallel plates and maintained in slidable electrical contact with the ground planes along the length of the center conductor. Each of the tuning elements is additionally made movable along a line perpendicular to the center conductor such that by varying the number and position of the elements relative to the center conductor, the magnitude and phase of the circuit impedance can be continuously adjusted.
