Variable Load Energy Absorber.

Abstract

The patent application relates to an improved energy absorbing device capable of providing a variable load to forces applied thereto. A cylindrical tube is constructed such that the wall thickness tapers along the longitudinal axis and one end has a plurality of slots spaced around the circumference of the cylinder at approximately equal intervals. The tube is positioned over a conical mandrel such that curling of the slotted end is initiated when force is applied to the tube. The curling of the slotted sections continues as the tube tears along lines substantially collinear with the slots. By controlling the degree of taper and tube length, a variable load is provided for dissipating energy as force is applied to the tube.
