Specification Navy Case Number 59,807.

Abstract

An improved optical system and technique is disclosed for providing high coupling efficiency, multimode operational capabilities, and versatile circuit design in the construction of various optical circuits. In particular, holographically formed thick modular optical elements are constructed as independent devices which can be combined with thick optical waveguide structures to produce a variety of unique optical systems. Each modular element is formed by depositing a photosensitive film on a separate substrate, holographically exposing the film, and developing the film to form an individual optical element. The optical elements are then removably or permanently attached to a thick optical waveguide with an index matching material to form a variety of optical circuits and systems. (Author)
