Benefication of Carbinolamine Compounds.

Abstract

This invention discloses a process for the conversion of erythro-alpha-(2-piperidyl)-2,8-bis-(trifluoromethyl)-4-quinoline methanol into the threo epimer. Said transformation results in practical means for obtaining an antimalarial having lower toxicity than the erythro compound, which is known as mefloquine. A relatively minor amount of the compound having the threo configuration is otherwise isolable from the manufacture of mefloquine.
