A Non-Explosive Lithium Battery.

Abstract

The invention relates to an improvement for an electrochemical power producing cell having an anode containing lithium, a cathode, and an electrolyte containing a cathode depolarizer from the group of sulfur oxyhalogens, wherein the improvement is the electrolyte also containing a sulfur solvent. The sulfur solvent keeps any free sulfur in solution so that the sulfur will not combine with the lithium to cause an explosion.
