Single-Slotted Positive Circulation Flap Apparatus for Vectored Thrust Aircraft.

Abstract

Vectored-thrust aircraft, such as the Harrier AV-8B, have engine nozzles that controllably direct high energy exhaust streams downwardly to provide a high-lift take-off and landing capability. By mounting single-slotted, fixed-pivot trailing-edge flaps in close proximity to such nozzles, a new form of boundary layer control is achieved in which the induced airflow in the vicinity of the nozzle is utilized to provide the same high lift effectiveness as heavier, more complicated flap designs.
