Adjustable Dynamic Face Seal.

Abstract

A fluid sealing system has an adjustable dynamic face seal and a plurality of static seals. The dynamic seal is formed by a seal ring that moves in its axial direction against a mating ring in response to forces applied. In operation a fluid film appears between the seal ring and mating ring. A circumferential chamber at an end of the seal ring is pressurized from an external source through a tube connecting from an air pressure source to the circumferential chamber. This permits a variable external control on the seal ring. In addition an external ambient pressure is applied to the seal ring in the same axial direction. A plurality of static seals are utilized to prevent the flow of the surrounding fluid throughout the system and for providing a fluid boundary for the air pressure. (Author)
