Three dB Single Mode Optical Fiber Interferometer Beamsplitter/Coupler.

Abstract

An improvement for a single mode, fiber ring interferometer reduces the problems normally associated with the use of lenses and conventional beamsplitters. The lenses and beamsplitters are replaced by single-mode optical fiber bidirectional couplers. These couplers are made by removing the claddings of two fibers over a predetermined length and then positioning and fixing the exposed cores together at a predetermined separation. This optical beamsplitter provides a rigid, mechanically stable assembly that effects a three dB energy splitting and coupling to the long single mode fiber in the interferometer. The method of fabricating the beamsplitter/coupler assures a long-term, reliable operation. The rigid structure produced resists the ambient effects of shock, vibration and temperature changes which would otherwise compromise the effectiveness of the interferometer. (Author)
