Stress Buffer/Amortisseur for a Permanent Magnet Rotor.

Abstract

The invention disclosed herein relates to permanent magnet (PM) electrical machinery, and in particular that class of machines in which the rotor is fabricated with multiple rare earth metal permanent magnets, generally having limited tensile and compressive strength, enclosed within a laminated rotor containment structure. The essential feature of the improvement taught is an intermediate sleeve, in the form of a layer of nonmagnetic electrically conductive material between the stress loaded multi-lamination containment hoop and the permanent magnets enclosed thereby. The sleeve is coaxial with the rotor and extends sufficiently to encase each magnet subjected to containment.
