An Ultrasonic Focusing System for the Warming of Cardiac Tissue.

Abstract

An ultrasonic system for warming of cardiac tissues which includes a plurality of focused ultrasonic transducers which are coupled through the skin and arranged so that their respective focused beams of energy are directed between the ribs of a patient to an overlapping area within the heart muscle thereof. The system thus allows selective heating of the heart muscle without excessive heating of the overlaying tissues and without reflection and absorption of the beams by the intervening bones in the rib cage.
