Preparation of Calcium Cyanamide.

Abstract

This invention relates to the economical production of a high purity calcium cyanamide from calcium carbonate and a mixture of ammonia and carbon dioxide in a multistage reactor. The multistage reactor increases the surface area for better contact between solid and gaseous reactants, removes the water formed, thus minimizing the decomposition of the product, and minimizes the cracking of ammonia by lowering the temperature of the reaction. The resulting calcium cyanamide has a purity of at least about 95% and contains no impurities which would deleteriously affect the BAF process. A further advantage is that the essentially pure calcium carbonate obtained as a by-product of the BAF process can be utilized according to the process of the present invention to produce calcium cyanamide employed as starting material in the BAF process.
