Synthesis of the Isomeric Aminotetranitrotoluenes.

Abstract

Novel aminotetranitrotoluenes, aryl compounds with four nitro groups introduced into the aromatic nucleus, are prepared by nitration of an appropriate aminodinitrotoluene precursor in mixed acid solution, followed by treatment with anisole. The inventive compounds are more energetic than TNT while imparting other desirable properties to explosives made therewith, such as high density, good thermal and chemical stability, stability towards impact and shock initiation, and improved detonation properties including detonation velocity and detonation pressure.
