Nitropolyformals.

Abstract

Nitropolyformals of the formula H(OCH2C(NO2)2ZC(NO2)2CH2OCH2(OCH2C(NO2)2ZC(NO2)2CH2 0H wherein Z is -CH2-, -CH2CH2-, -CH2CH2CH2-, -CH2OCH2-, or -CH2NHCH2- and wherein the average molecular weight of the nitro-polyformal molecules if from about 1,000 to about 50,000. the nitropolyformals are prepared by reacting a diol of the formula HOCH2C(NO2)2ZC(NO2)2CH20H, wherein Z is defined as above, with formaldehyde in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid. These polymers are useful as energetic binders in explosives and propellants. (Author)
