System and Method for Measuring Sharpness and/or Stroke Width of Characters on a Video Display.

Abstract

The present invention provides a video display character sharpness and/or stroke width measuring system and method designed to satisfy the aforementioned needs. The unique feature of the present invention is its use of charge-coupled device (CCD) detector array technology to directly measure edge gradient (sharpness) and stroke width of displayed characters. More specifically, the CCD technology is utilized to accurately measure the average rate of luminance increase (or decrease) at an edge, and/or measure the width at half intensity, of characters generated on a display device, or for that matter also on a printed page. In such manner, the invention provides a simple and rapid means of measuring two display characteristics that have been shown to impact display quality and, as a consequence, observer performance.
