A Cable Deployment System.

Abstract

The present invention relates to launching systems, and more particularly to a cable deployment system for deploying an instrumentation package in an oceanographic environment. Generally deployment of an instrumentation package in an oceanographic environment consists of attaching a cable to the package and lowering the package via a winch which rotates a cable drum upon which the cable is wound. Alternatively, cables are baled in a buoy from which the package drops. However often it is desired to deploy a long cable from a ship, airplane, buoy, etc., with a simple device driven by the force of gravity with minimum risk of cable fouling or excessive cable fouling or excessive cable strain.
