Solid Fuel Ramjet Tubular Projectile for Direct Fire Cannon.

Abstract

The invention in this case is a solid fuel ramjet tubular projectile adapted to be fired from conventional direct fire cannon. The projectile is essentially of hollow cylindrical tubular shape having an air inlet at its forward end and a nozzle at its aft end. Supersonic air which enters at the inlet is abruptly slowed to subsonic velocity causes the temperature and the pressure of the incoming air to rise sufficiently to ignite a layer of solid fuel lining the inner wall, between the inlet section and the nozzle, of the projectile. Combustion of this fuel generates a gas which then flows through the nozzle at the aft end of the projectile. This process provides the ramjet action which creates the thrust to propel the projectile to the target in a minimum of time and with a relatively flat trajectory requiring less compensatory correction of disruptive forces when aiming at the target than the conventional projectiles.
