Discrete Step Actuation System.

Abstract

This application discloses discrete step actuator comprising a pair of pistons which operate in a push-push mode against an output bellcrank and torsion bar. A multiplicity of squibs are positioned in separate manifolds associated with each piston chamber. Either piston is actuated by the initiation of a squib in the manifold thereby producing a pressure impulse within the piston chamber below the piston. The piston and bellcrank are displaced and an opposing moment is generated by the torsion bar. A fixed orifice is provided to bleed the squib gas from the piston chamber in a predetermined amount of time as the torsion bar returns the bellcrank and piston to the neutral position.
