Mass Spectrometer for the Analysis of Consecutive Ion Dissociations.

Abstract

A mass spectrometer capable of analyzing consecutive dissociations of ions includes a plurality of electric-field dissociation regions wherein ions are dissociated into fragment ions. A mass analyzer is provided to select ions from an ionized sample of a particular mass, which are then passed into the electric-field dissociation regions. A cell comprising conductive plates to which electrical potentials are applied generate an electric field adjacent to each electric-field dissociation region, wherein the electric field has lines of force in both directions along the ion path which act to change the velocities of fragment ions resulting from dissociations in the electric-field dissociation regions. The various ions are then passed into analyzer, which selects ions according to velocity, the ions then being passed to a detector. A spectrum is thereby obtained wherein the offset of certain peaks from normal levels is indicative of a consecutive dissociation. (Author)
