Compact Brake Structure.
Abstract
In one aspect, this patent application related to brake system. In a further aspect, this invention relates to braking systems for use with rotating shafts. A wide variety of various braking structures have been proposed. Examples include clutch packs with discs having one set of discs attached to a housing and a second interleaved set of discs attached to a rotating shaft, so that the discs can be forced together to stop the shafts rotation. Another suitable brake structure is a drum brake structure with shoes mounted on the rotating shaft which can be expanded to contact the drum and stop the shaft. The prior art systems in their various embodiments have proved useful. Such systems are particularly good in environments where a large brake structure can be mounted. However, for some applications, a small brake with a high effective braking force would be desirable. This invention has a driven rotary shaft mounted within a housing which is rigidly affixed to a base number. A plurality of annular U-shaped braking members are disposed within the housing and coaxially about the rotatary shaft. A force applicator is associated with the braking members and can apply an axial force to deform them. The axial force causes a deformation in the braking members which brings a portion of the outer edge of the braking members into contact with the interior of the housing. The inner portions of the braking members are simultaneously brought into contact with the outer surface of the shaft to apply a braking force.
