Method of Preparing Tetrahydrofuran.

Abstract

This invention relates generally to organic synthesis and more particularly to the synthesis of cyclic ethers. An object of this invention is to provide a new method of synthesizing tetrahydrofuran. Another object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive method of preparing tetrahydrofuran. A further object of this invention is to provide a simpler, quicker method of preparing tetrahydrofuran. Yet another object of this invention is to prepare tetrahydrofuran by a method involving fewer side reactions. These and other objects of this invention are accomplished by heating 1,4-butanediol in the presence of a trivalent metal sulfate which is aluminum sulfate, ferric sulfate, chromic sulfate, or mixtures thereof to a temperature of from 130 C to 230 C.
