Electrolyte for Lithium-Inorganic Non-Aqueous Rechargeable Cell System and Rechargeable Cell System Including Said Electrolyte.

Abstract

The general object of this invention is to provide an improved high energy lithium inorganic non-aqueous rechargeable cell system. A more particular object of the invention is to provide such an improved system wherein the lithium dithionite discharge product can be chemically oxidized so that the carbon cathode capacity is increased. The aforementioned objects can be attained by using a liquid electrolyte comprising sulfur dioxide complexed at room temperature with a salt that dissolves in sulfur dioxide without the assistance of organic co-solvents and with soluble molecular chlorine added to the complex to saturate the electrolyte. The present invention provides an improved lithium-inorganic non-aqueous rechargeable cell system having an electrolyte based on sulfur dioxide and containing dissolved molecular chlorine. The cell includes an alkali metal anode, an inorganic conductive electrolyte composed of either a metal, a metal chloride, an electroactive polymer, a carbonaceous material, a blend of carbonaceous materials, or a blend of carbonaceous materials and various metals, metallic compounds or electroactive polymers. One of the preferred salts that can dissolve in sulfur dioxide without the assistance of organic co-solvents is LiAlCl4.
