Heterogeneous Magnetoresistant Layer.

Abstract

A magnetoresistant material is comprised of discrete units of magnetostrictive material separated from one another by one or more gaps. In one class of embodiments, magnetostrictive particles are embedded in a phase-separated nonmagnetostrictive matrix. In one embodiment, a magnetoresistant article is made by cosputtering particles of a magnetostrictive material and a quantity of a nonmagnetostrictive material onto an nonmagnetostrictive substrate. The magnetostrictive particles are spaced from one another by distances in the range of 10 to 100 angstroms. In another embodiment, a magnetostrictive substrate. Magnetic field sensors employing such articles are also provided. Patent applications. (jhd)
