Magnetostrictive Angular Positioning Motor.

Abstract

This patent application discloses a device in which a plurality of axially elongated drive modules are interconnected at their opposite ends in a polygonal arrangement to angularly spaced locations on an outer annular ring to establish compressive stress therein, while intermediate portions of the modules are radially spaced form an inner shaft through which a common rotational axis extends. Each module includes at least two magnetostrictive rod elements held in axial alignment at their adjacent ends by a coupling through which the module is radially spaced from the common axis and drive coils electrically energized to generate magnetic fields of opposite polarity causing simultaneous elongation and contraction of the rod elements to apply unidirectional torque to a rotor formed by either the outer ring or the inner shaft.
