Catheter, Catheter System and Method using Fluoride Fiber Laser and Silica Fiber.

Abstract

A catheter, catheter system and method using a fiber laser and silica fiber coupled to the fiber laser. The catheter preferably includes an erbium-doped fluoride fiber laser which utilizes the 4I11/2 to 4I13/2 transition to generate a laser output at a wavelength of about 2780 nanometers which is at or near the maximum radiation absorption wavelength of organic tissue. An optical fiber, preferably a silica fiber, is coupled to the fluoride fiber laser to guide a pump beam thereto. In the catheter system, the pump beam is preferably generated by a laser diode emitting laser light at a wavelength of about 800 nanometers.
