Method and Apparatus for a New Transduction Mechanism for Large Area Conformal Hydrophones.

Abstract

A novel sensing portion for an interferometric hydrophone has one or more hollow compliant mandrels, a sensing optical fiber sequentially wound around each of these mandrels to form a single, serial, optical sensing path between an input position on a first mandrel and an output position on a last mandrel, and an acoustically transparent material encapsulating these mandrels to form a sealed compliant unit. These mandrels are bendable, to allow for the manufacture of conformal hydrophones. A novel interferometric hydrophone has a coherent light source, a light detector, the novel sensing portion, an input optical fiber coupled between the input position on the sensing portion and the coherent light source, and an output optical fiber coupled between said the sensing portion and the light detector
