An Interactive Software System for Optimal Design of Statically and Dynamically Loaded Structures with Nonlinear Response,

Abstract

The definition of a design problem in terms of an optimization problem involves identifying an objective function and suitbale constraint functions. Historically, since optimization techniques were first used in the aerospace industry, weight of the structure has been considered as the objective function. For design of structures subjected to dynamic loads, such as earthquake excitation, other objective functions such as life-time cost better reflect appropriate perfomance objectives.
