Thermal Signature Targets for Gunnery Training,

Abstract

The United States Army has achieved a significant advantage over the Warsaw Pact forces in the area of tank gunnery under conditions of darkness, smoke, fog, and rain. This advantage has been gained through the development of the tank thermal sight. The ambient temperature, under virtually all environmental conditions, including smoke and darkness. Since the Soviets are particularly adept at fighting under cover of smoke, the ability of U.S. gunners to acquire a high skill level in the use of the thermal sight is imperative to allow rapid acquisition and identification of enemy vehicles and personnel. Gunnery training under adverse conditions of darkness, smoke, fog, and rain are now being conducted with the aid of a thermal signature target developed through PM-TRADE. The background leading to the development of a Thermal Signature Target as well as a detailed description of a modular, full scale tank Thermal target system is presented. (Author)
