The Trend Towards Area of Interest in Visual Simulation Technology,
Abstract
The challenge of providing a cost and training effective wide field of view, high detail density visual environment to the trainee in a flight simulator is being answered by developments in both the generation and display of visual imagery. To overcome the inefficiency and cost of filling the large field of view using multiple television projectors giving butted images, various techniques are being developed for concentrating high image detail in an area of interest (AOI) which is usually of high resolution and set within a larger field of view of low resolution. This paper reviews the advantages and disadvantages of the various AOI techniques including an AOI that is tracked with a target, tracked with head attitude, and eye tracked. Particular references is made to recent Navy, Air Force and Army developments.
