Barricade/Shield Testing New Thinking on Heat Flux Requirements,

Abstract

In 1976 MIL-STD 398 was published to help standardize on the criteria which must be met to properly protect an operator. As it states in the 'Foreword' of this publication dated 5 Nov 1976: 'This standard defines the minimum criteria necessary to design an operational shield which will protect personnel and assets from thermal, pressure and fragmentation hazards resulting from an accidental or intentional detonation of ammunition or explosives, and identifies methods for testing prototype operational shields to assess the degree to which they meet the protection criteria specified; and Criteria identified in this standard are recognized as providing an environment that affords adequate protection for personnel and assets.' Besides the area of overpressure, which is well documented and has transducers which can follow fast response pressure waves, the less defined and established area of heat flux was addressed.
