Characterization of Ruggedized Fiber Optic Dual Wavelength Cables,

Abstract

This paper summarizes the design, manufacture and evaluation, including cable installation, of dual window (850 nm and 1300 nm) optical fiber cables utilized in the MX missile command control and communication test instrumentation system at Vandenberg Air Force Base. Qualification tests on the finished cables were performed on test equipment especially designed to meet Military Standards DOD 1678. The cables were subjected to impact, tension, compression and low temperature flexibility, while concurrently monitoring optical fiber power levels at 850 and 1300 nm. Temperature cycling, water penetration, water tightness, shock and vibration characteristics of the cables were also obtained. The test equipment employed and the results obtained are discussed herein. (Author)
