Traction Calculations and Design Data for Two Traction Fluids,

Abstract

In this paper it has been demonstrated how the traction performance of a typical drive can be predicted from the basic knowledge of two fluid parameters, the initial traction slope, and the peak traction coefficient. These two parameters are given for two high-traction fluids as a function on inlet temperature, contact pressure, surface velocity, aspect ratio, and, in the case of the peak traction coefficient, the amount of spin on the contact. The traction behavior of the two fluids is very similar, with only minor differences. Thermal effects are not treated in this paper but can play a major part in the traction behavior of a contact. Current research indicates that a fairly simple thermal correction gives very good results. Also, very recent research by the author has indicated that the fundamental fluid properties of shear modulus and fluid shear strength can be represented by as few as three terms involving pressure and temperature only.
