Development of Synthetic Media for Biological Treatment of Municipal and Industrial Wastewaters,
Abstract
This paper presents aspects of the critical early stages in the development of plastic media, experiences with relevance and potential applicability to current implementation of innovative and alternative solutions to problems of wastewater treatment and management. Previously unpublished results from operation of several experimental units during the period from 1954 through 1958 are presented. Included are data and results from units that were packed to depths of 42 feet and which were constructed to make intermediate depth-sampling possible. One unit, which was constructed to permit measurement of air-flow through the packing, provided data confirming the previously known but sparsely documented potential for stagnation in trickling filters, a factor potentially affecting performance.
