Application of Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) Process for Treatment of Wastewater Containing a Firefighting Agent (AFFF) Aqueous Film Forming Foam,

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine the feasibility of treating wastewater containing aqueous film forming foam (FC-780) by an aerobic RBC. The preliminary data presented here demonstrates that FC-780 is conducive to aerobic bioconversion and removal with a properly adapted RBC unit. A significant reduction in COD, BOD and TOC has been achieved in synthetic wastewater containing up to 1000 ppm COD of FC-780. It is possible that FC-780 loading may be increased further and that higher reduction of the parameters may be obtained by changes inflow rates and contact times. These possibilities are being actively addressed in preparation of scale up for pilot plant operation.
