Analysis of Multilayer Dielectric Waveguide Structures,

Abstract

Multilayer dielectric structures are analyzed to determine the optical waveguiding properties of the surface and leaky waves that can be supported by such structures. Each layer in these structures is assumed to have a uniform dielectric constant that may include an absorption term. Any finite number of layers can be treated by this analysis. The method of transmission line theory is appliedto this problem in order to keep the formulation both tractable and general enough to include an arbitrary distribution of piecewise uniform dielectric constants in the multilayer structure. The resulting equations are placed into a simple form that is convenient for effective computer programming. A computer program based on these equations is developed and used to investigate optical waveguiding in representative multilayer structures. (Author)
