Electronically Steerable Spherical Array Provides Multiple Beam Coverage of a Hemisphere,

Abstract

This paper describes the Electronically Steerable Spherical Array (ESSA) antenna and its configuration for multiple beam operation over a hemispherical coverage region. This paper discusses the ESSA's theory of operation along with its RF components. The ESSA is unusual in that by switching between beams (which are made of sets of elements located on a spherical surface) the ESSA is able to provide constant gain and phase independent of the scan angle.
