Viewframes: A Connectionist Model of Form Perception,

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to show that a wide variety of perceptual phenomena have succinct explanations given the concept of frame primitives. A frame primitive is a local coordinate frame attached to certain more primitive perceptual data. The idea of assigning coordinate frames to objects and the role of such frames in gestalt phenomena is appreciated but has not been extensively modeled. We show that an implementation of frame primitives in a parallel, connectionist model has special virtues in understanding many aspects of perceptual dynamics. (Author)
