Aptitude Testing in DoD and the Profile of American Youth Study,

Abstract

This paper provides a brief discussion of aptitude testing in the Department of Defense and the rationale for Defense sponsorship of the Profile of American Youth Study. Also described as the historical development of the current version of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), as well as its enlistment eligibility composite, the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT). The aptitude profile study involved administration of the 1980 version of ASVAB to a national probability sample of approximately 12,000 young men and women ages 16 and 23. The young people sampled were participants in the National Longitudinal Survey (NLS) of Youth Labor Force Behavior sponsored by the Department of Labor. The methodology, sampling procedures, test administration, and data quality controls used in the execution of the Profile of American Youth Study are described. (Author)
