New Technology and Employment: Extensions to the Case of Developing Countries,

Abstract

The main purpose of this work is to attempt to get away from the microeconomic analysis of much of the work on the impact of new technology and to consider the macroeconomic questions. If a firm uses microelectronic technology then it may well produce a given level of output with less labour. However the impact on the demand for labour in the whole economy depends on many other factors and that is what is discussed here. The main body of the work reported on here was designed for the analysis of a closed developed economy. In the Appendix the details of the model itself are discussed. In section 2 we report on the employment paths that the model predicts will result from the introduction of new technology, and at that stage we will keep formal analysis to a minimum to save space and improve clarity. In section 3 we discuss the issues that will arise when the model is extended to an open economy. In section 4 the issues that are relevant in the developing economy context will be discussed. In section 5 conclusions are drawn.
