USAE Division/District Presentations Aquatic Plant Problems-Operations Activities: South Atlantic Division, Jacksonville District,

Abstract

The Jacksonville District conducts aquatic plant control operations under three separate authorizations. The River and Harbor Act of 1899; Public Law 89-298, 1965; Project operations and maintenance; The major problem species which required control efforts during FY82 were: Emersed species; Floating species; Submersed species. Due to the biological nature of the aquatic plant problem and the exponential growth rate of the main nuisance exotic species, a dependable sustained level of funding is required to maintain control. Fluctuations in the level of control caused by budget reductions will allow these problems species to expand to levels which caused economic and environmental stress. The continued success of the Corps' operational aquatic plant control program is dependent upon a consistent funding policy and continuation and expansion of the maintenance control project.
