A Quaternary Cellular Array Complex Number Multiplier,

Abstract

Knuth has proposed an unconventional single component representation of complex numbers whereby the radix is chosen to be purely imaginary (2j) with the digit set comprised of the first four positive integers (0,1,2,3,). This is in contrast with the conventional two components representation with binary radix whether in Cartesian or polar coordinates. As shown in a previous paper this novel representation leads to simple and interesting arithmetic in the complex field. In this paper we shall examine the design of a complex-number multiplier, organized in a regular cellular array. Such a structure is highly desirable for VLSI implementation. (Author)
