Modernization of the Military Specification for Quartz Crystal Units,

Abstract

The military specification for quartz crystal units, MIL-C-3098G1, is, at the time of this publication, woefully out-of-date. Several of the specified performance parameters and measurement techniques are inadequate for modern applications. In addition, many required inspections are not addressed, such as motional capacitance, activity dips and radiation hardness. The philosophy behind the revision of the specification will be discussed and several of the major modifications will be described. Some of the modifications to be discussed are the elimination of the CI-meter as a standard test set and a description of the new or modified inspections for acceleration sensitivity, acoustical noise sensitivity, frequency-temperature behavior, thermal shock, aging and short-term stability.
