Studies of the Velocity Structure of the Gulf Stream East of Cape Hatteras,

Abstract

Between September 1980 and May 1983 seventeen bimonthly sections of velocity and temperature will have been obtained across the Gulf Stream 200 km downstream from Cape Hatteras. Assuming the last cruise goes well, we will have fourteen complete sections of high quality, and several more from the central part of the Stream. By summer 1983 the raw data will have been fully edited, calibrated and organized for systematic analyses. Preliminary analysis of the first eight transects gives a mean transport of 78 + or - 11 Sv between the surface and 2000 m. The standard deviation is between sections. This mean appears to be quite a bit smaller than the 91 Sv we estimate from Worthington's book (1976) assuming a reference velocity of 4.5 cm/s at 2000 m.
