The Eddy Field of the Central North Atlantic,

Abstract

Sixty-eight satellite-tracked buoys were released in the western and central North Atlantic during 1981 and 1982. Mean velocity values and the variance about the mean were calculated for 20 selected areas. The mean velocities confirm the large-scale gyre circulation. The velocity variance decreases toward the east and south. East of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge the eddy kinetic energy reaches values of about 200 sq cm/s at 500 N, but only 50 sq cm/s at 30 N.
