Flow Past a Flexible Membrane,

Abstract

The deformation of a two-dimensional membrane due to the flow of an incompressible fluid around it is considered. The membrane is assumed to be flexible and inextensible. The problem is related to the flow of air past parachutes. Numerical solutions are obtained by discretization of the model nonlinear integrodifferential equation describing the flow. The numerical results are shown to be in reasonable agreement with experiments. In addition some aspects of the effect of porosity are discussed. (Author)
