Adaptation to Irregularity of Rest and Activity,

Abstract

Adaptation to conventional shiftwork has been the subject of considerable research (Colquhoun & Rutenfranz, 1980), but there is little information on the effect of irregular work and rest which is usually a feature of air operations (Nicholson, 1970). Under such circumstances the circadian rhythmicity of the individual and changes in the quality of sleep, as well as the duration of each work period, are likely to influence effectiveness at any given time, and it is to evaluate the influence of these factors that we have carried out the present study.
